Maybe I just misread, but I didn't see any 'Pitcher runs north' thingies... I think he may have just figured he didn't have any hope. Didn't whip out Aiglos, didn't chant his runes, didn't really try to escape. Been there done that (back when ERs were first released into the main system, I was running from Nasira & Bang near Thranduils - didn't think to run IN to Thranduil's, ran towards elven shield and died like a noob), but you still gotta hate a 'Screw it, I'm dead anyway' death.
I'd say with a fair amount of certainty he didn't have the ep. Or wimpy kicked in.
