There is a poison which you dont have to drink and does more damage than this... much more
but your right, he shouldnt have died there, it was some form of bug.
This is ummm... very glitched. It seems as though the game still treated laefang as being in combat with her while he was outside the lair. Her poison only takes EP, Laefang should have never died in this case. No poison in arda can do this damage (unless drunk directly), its against balance codes I believe. So my best guess is that for some reason, the game glitched and still had the shelob attacks hitting laefang when he fell down outside the lair. (if you think about it, thats about how hard she would normally hit per round against a single person).
Ouch. Didn't know that poison could actually kill. Or perhaps she was just really really hungry with the main gate being 'open' and all. ;)
I guess next time no more do commands in your trigger :P

I've been poisoned plenty, never fell unconscious though

*wince* Thanks for the heads up. I've run in there a few times just to test how long she takes and about how much she'll do in damage in a round, things like that... never been poisoned, though. That's rough.
