through all of the levels of Minas Tirith to the gates.  The tunnel
is only about ten feet long so it's not much darker inside than outside.

    This is the entrance to the Great Hall of the Guard. As you
emerge from the tunnel, a huge, ornately carved door stands before you.
This is where members of the Guard come for training and equipment,
or even for rest when they are off duty. However, times are now bleak
for the Guard as the great threat from the East surrounds the city.
Tall stone columns frame the doorway and convey a sense of centuries- 
old tradition and grandeur. Even this entryway is richly decorated as
if a small part of ancient Numenor still remained here among the common
buildings of this day.

of the mountain in which Minas Tirith nestles, stretches across every 
level of the City.  From bottom to top, its edge sharp as a ship-keel, 
this stone tower rises facing to the east.  A tunnel has been carved 
from the stone and the wide street of the City continues through it. 
The lamps here are attached to the stone keel rather than to poles.

framework with the occasional standing home.  Soon nothing will be
left but battered wood and black ash.  Only the slightest sense of
hope remains in the air as you wander down the street -- a sense of hope

encircles the Pelennor Fields.  The passage of the Dark One's armies
have battered it to ruins.  Stones and broken mortar lay strewn about
everywhere in this large gap in the wall.  The road runs east and
west.  A path has been created by the passage of the many armies to
Osgiliath and back, to and from the Mordor army headquarters.

    A sense of pure evil and death permeates the air around you as you look 
down upon this camp.  Several large tents are set up in this area, with one
large tent in what can be called the center of the camp.  All around the
tents is a large field filled with the dead and dying of the armies of
Mordor.  Orcs, Easterlings, trolls, and other beasts lay in heaps around
the field.  From some of the piles you can actually hear the moanings of 
those still living.  Fires have been set to burn the corpses.  Orcs run 
back and forth, taking the dead to the pyres.  Blood covers the ground and the 
sky is blotted out by the great smog of Sauron.  The situation seems
hopeless for the men of Gondor.  Even with all of these dead troops, the 
armies of Mordor will still win.

to replenish their troops.

west road.  The once mighty city spreads out before you to the very edges
of the Anduin.  As you gaze upon the remains of this fallen city, you see
grey stone buildings abandoned long ago, eroded by the ages to ruins, and
now crumbled and marred even further by recent battle.  You see several
columns of smoke curling up toward the sky from spots throughout the 
city.  Perhaps Osgiliath is not as empty as initially seemed.

some sort of skirmish was fought here in the past day or so. The 
fletching on the arrows indicates the Ithilien Rangers. The encampment 
must have been hastily abandoned for a couple of tents are still
standing towards the north. To the west is a large trash pile, and 
there is a pervasive stench in the air.

and thorn bushes.

such.  The weeds have been trampled down in places, but you can not see
any significant pattern.  The ground feels soft and damp under your feet,
as if this area was flooded not too long ago.  In fact, the only thing
that catches your eye is the thorn bush to one side.

that runs along the tops of a long series of large, low wooden
boats floating on the Anduin.  The bridge is fairly wide for such
a temporary structure, but is not nearly as sturdy as the original
bridge that connected the west bank to the island.  You gaze west
and then east, and can make out the remains of the original stone
bridge of Osgiliath, now in ruins.  The Orcs were quite efficient
at putting up a new one quickly, though.

seen much use by Sauron's forces. Some of the buildings still
standing seem to be occupied at the moment, a sad end to the
