Actually the dark blade's ability increases with lower align. But since ERs gain lower alignment by levelling up, it seems to them to be level-based.

I have no idea how the wep works or how good it is, but the point would probely be, that if your lvl 20 you rock ass with that weapon, while at lvl 16 you might consider using another weapon? Once again, i have no idea, but if it's level based that is probely the point :)
isnt every weapon level based? if a level 1 has whip, its not as effective as level 19....i know, the weapon stats dont change, but its still not as effective. so whats the point?

Yeah, the dark blade used to be the standard ER weapon, making it one of the oldest pieces of ER gear you could possibly obtain. Used to be a lot cooler, though... your ability to use it increased at a certain rate, giving different wield messages and stuff.
I heard someone say it was a weapon from old ERs, though the story has not been repeated.
It's been around since the first time Nasira PKed me, at least.

Sort of new, from a certain perspective, perhaps. It's been the ER auction weapon at reboot for as long as I can remember being an ER.
I don't think so...this was 'a dark blade', which I think is sort of new?
Is that the same one that cripples you's leg with an underhanded swing?
Because I feel like I made a typo report about that two years ago and they never bothered with it. :p
