This happened to me too the other day. I drank a phial at -13 hp and lived. No unconscious was wierd.

There isn't a command limit between heart beats... anything you can do within 2 seconds..
Usually when I go below 0 hp, I get that annoying 'You are unconcious and can do nothing' message. Ravathir manages to do 6 different things before even drinking, at -21 hp and poisoned.. I don't find this trustworthy, somehow. :P
I survived pretty similar to this once, BUT i thought only one command was allowed before heartbeat, I.E he should have managed to reveal the vial then dead. Ooh well lucky heartbeat i guess.
I have to admit, I saw critical and thought he was dead...and was stunned when he started running. Had to collect myself :)
And I did headbutt that one time and it failed. Any other headbutts wouldn't have mattered as the rest of the log went...20hp wouldn't have killed him...heck, he lived with -21...
