Exhalev didn't hit his healing because he didn't want the busy rounds which might (and would) have enable Winnetou to escape. Winnetou was certainly setting Exhalev up.

Mirnac: if he had had a tent, he would have broken. In the end he DID break Exhalev, but Exhalev was bleeding to death and couldn't have hunted anyway. Winnetou was trying to break, him surviving and Exhalev dying were two different objectives.
The reason he ran for linhir, and GH was to stay close in that area to be able to survive. His tent was probely old habbits kicking in.

He didn't break because he wanted to kill his attacker. DOH! If you break your attacker wont follow you, or atleast in my book that is a break.
