I think, guessing by the directions he went when he was at kadar north gate that he was trying to swim to break, he then dropped all his gear thinking he was too encumbered to swim. In the end he must of forgotten that you can't swim while in combat. Why he ran somewhere else to break when there are so many good breaks in and around linhir still boggles my mind though. *shrugs*
