Before you is the great tower of Orthanc, a menace still in the desolation that lies around it. The black rock which makes up the tower gleams as if it was wet even when it is not. The many faces of stone have sharp edges as if they had been newly chiseled. A few scorings, and small flake-like splinters at its base, are all the marks it bears from the fury of the Ents. On the eastern side there is a great door high above the ground; and over it a shuttered window, opening upon a balcony hedged with iron bars. This is the only entrance to the tower of Orthanc, but, alas, the key is locked inside with its master! The only obvious exit is southeast.
