It's not like it really matters at this point(I can't remember the last time someone was condescending towards me for being from Herkimer), but I feel like I should clarify my position on things. And for the record, I don't live there anymore. :p I live in my own place and very rarely visit Herkimer.
That being said, I'm glad that there are a few people from Herkimer that have managed to stay under the radar and enjoy the game without being shoved into a group of people defined by the actions of a few. I'm not saying I like or dislike all of them as a group - there are a few misconceptions made with the 'Herkies' - but opinions aren't formed out of nowhere. I'm the first person to admit that certain people acted like jackasses and others had to pay the price for it. Whether you defend or condemn the Herkies for what they do or how they play, I'm glad people at least try to realize that there are a few exceptions. Some people really are just asshats, and some people are getting pulled down with a sinking ship.
More than anything, I feel sorry for Nathicana. He really is a fantastic teacher, as anyone who actually had him for English will readily admit. He really loves this game (and Tolkien's world in general) and wanted his students to see what he saw when he played here. The majority of the people that have made the Herkie name so hated never had him as a teacher and really don't reflect his intentions with the project.

I'm not even sure the 'bad herks' are a majority; I mean, people dislike Hazin (with excellent reason), Cruice, Norre, Belial (as of recently) and in some circles Letina. People nearly universally like Hoshkebosh and Adoni, Narshock is not disliked, Gilstro was at the very least on acceptable terms with a majority of the mud, Calicious could wear on people but was generally well liked -- that's a 1:1 ratio, if you count Letina as a bad herk. And while I'm pretty sure I didn't get all of the well accepted or well liked Herks, I'm pretty sure I did get all the disliked ones (from Herkimer; Aether and Aaron both got labeled Herks for a while at least, but neither are from Herkimer).

The vilification of the Herks is from while you were gone. Everyone from that town who is disliked has done something at some point to deserve it. People like Hoshkebosh, Adoni, Calicious, and until recently Belial, despite being from Herkimer, have been spared 'the hate' because they never asked for it.
So basically they created a monster they are no longer able to control; Norre has always had a mouth on him, but for the last several months at least he's been _much_ better about controlling what he says. His PKs have gone from anything that moves to a very select target base. If you introduced him as he is now into the mud before he had a reputation, he probably would not earn one. However, he engendered _so_ much resentment before he improved (and more than a little even after) that it's following him around, much like Milentije.
Though I seriously think that Lobo is more jokingly beating a dead horse with the Herk-Hate than he is actually reviling them.

I don't really get the herk-hate. There have been so many players (and groups of players) that at one time or another have dominated this mud in the pk arena...and I've never seen any kind of hatred like I see here.

I would say both are examples of stereotyping. I'd also like to add that Norre and Belial are infinitely more reasonable, approachable, and decent human beings that Winnetou and Aeldor could ever hope to be.

Without agreeing with Belial in any way, I understand that Nathicana introduced many of the beloved players from Herkimer, including Hoshkebosh to the game, and that many of the more reviled ones, such as Ravathir, Hazin, and Cruice started playing because of older sibs or older friends.
I could have some detail(s) wrong, but the impression that I got is that Nathicana's original crop is almost exclusively either a valuable part of the community or stopped playing immediately after the project was done. So I think he was actually a step removed from the creation of what is now known as the 'Herkie'.
