    solution:

    2 muds.

    mud 1: allows PVP interaction.

    Mud 2: does not.

same rooms, same quests, if you dont want to interact, you dont bother anyone else.

This is true, Draimon. Although I cannnot speak for you personally, or pontificate on the standard of living in Solon, I am under the impression that sexual assaults of that nature by the homeless are something of an infrequent occurrence. The same in general can be said of playerkilling. I know that random killing for less than substantive reasons does occur, but I honestly don't think it's started happening any more in the last year or so than it did in the previous decade that T2T was running. Not enough, in my eyes, to warrant the implementation of a PK flag.

srsly lets pretend t2t is a small world. lets name this world for the sake of my theory arda. say this world is made up of creatures, lets call them hobbits, dwarves, humans elves and shit. now lets assume these hobbits and whatnot act much like humans, in the way that they do things for their gain and desires, giving in to emotions and anger and shit. so its sort of like an earth, but its arda because its like a game and shit right. so in earth like if you went up to a insane crazy homeless person and shoved your cock in his mouth or called his house shitty against his will he'd probably be likely to cause you harm. or maybe you walk by ignoring him, but he still attacks you. either way. its not up to you if you are attacked, because in a world with more than 1 person in it you cant control the actions of another. until now of course, which as demonstrated by my awesome essay above, is fucking sutpid

Or better yet, shut your fucking mouth and be polite to other players.

Josi is a prime example. He's been here somewhere in the range of a decade, and I doubt he's been PKed outside of mordor more than 3 or 4 times. You know why? Because he's kind, not aggressive, and respectful. The people who get PKed in this game almost always earn it in someway, whether their method of earning it is to be in the wrong place at a wrong time (An issue easily solved with situational awareness and common sense) or to draw the ire of an assassin by fucking with people. In fact, Josi is a prime example of why we will never /need/ a pvp flag; I don't know why I didn't think of him earlier.

Meanwhile, the PVP flag allows shitbags like Chowtsu and Frost and Trenchant and all the other names Etrius listed off to continue their shitbag behavior with no repercussions outside of Ainu interference. I think we can all agree that every time the players can't act like fucking adults and handle shit themselves, and bring Valinor into the picture, shit goes awry and no one wins.

PVP is a core mechanic in T2T. If you don't want it forced on you, go play a MUSH or a singleplayer game.

This gives way to another issue, PVP does not administer proper death penalties when in PVP. At the very least, it should be in relationship to how much a person kills/attacks others (where someone who seldom/never does, will have hardly a penalty for dying maybe instead of some stupid pk flag).

Given the tendency of Mathias and various other members of the administration to dismiss a lot of the criticism leveled at them as 'whining' and 'unproductive' I made a deliberate effort to sound as calm and sensible as possible; although I couldn't resist a small swipe at the end.

You're sort of right, Tireless. In a discussion with Mathias earlier today he told me that the playerbase had never managed to mitigate spreekilling or other forms of anti-social behaviour in the past. I don't believe this is true. Think of the newbiekillers and nuisances of the past. Think of Chowt and Frosty. Think of Anvik. Think of Streak. Think of Trenchant. Think of Arios. Do a search for all of those names on this webpage, and look at the numerosity and diversity of the players which killed them. I guess that's what I'm talking about.

I agree with you, Etrius. I might be misstating your feelings on the matter, but I think this is more or less following up on what you said. The ambient fear of PK among newer players serves as a deterrent against being a dick. When I was a new player I was as bad as the 'herks' ever were when it comes to trash talking. Eventually I came to the attention of FRA -- I guess I talked trash to one of their alts or friends or something -- and they started killing me. They kept killing me until I learned my place. Then they stopped. I stopped talking trash, fell in line and became (I feel) a productive, contributing member of the community.

There is no real method of enforcing social standards on people without the PK system. Do some people abuse it? Sure. PVP flags are equally able to be abused. The only difference is that when someone is PKed, they can talk to someone and make a fight of it. With the PVP flag, their only method of recourse is talking to Valinor.

The more Valinor tries to control things, the more it will be forced to control things. ...and ultimately the situation will be no better than it was before, regardless of how much Valinor sticks its fingers in the pie.

'Well, I was ranting about this on the comm earlier and a 'Someone' suggested that I summarize some of my thoughts in this thread rather than ministering from a soapbox in my guildhall's tavern.

Sometimes people on this game are, for lack of a better word, jerks.

Sometimes you're waiting for a quest to reset, and someone just jumps in front of you and does it themselves. Sometimes you have to go away from the keyboard unexpectedly and you idle out, and someone grabs your gear and sells or auctions it instead of returning it. Sometimes, when newer players ask for advice, there are people who tell them to 'Knock on Mordor gates!' or 'do 40 kill scalus.' Some people, if we're honest, are just rude, inconsiderate and downright nasty. None of this is abuse, per se, and none of it is explicitly against the rules, yet these players are deserving of punishment nonetheless.

Enter playerkilling and the contract system.

In instances like this, the community has shown a tendency to police itself. My concern is that the addition of a PK flag will only serve to make behavior of this nature all the more rampant because players of these attitude will now effectively be immune to retaliation from other players. That, in my eyes, is the last thing we need if we're attempting to recruit new players.

I disagree with the assertion that a majority of the playerbase is here for PvP. People come here for a myriad of different reasons. This is a game of many facets. Some people do come here for PvP, it's true, but others come for roleplaying. Some for questing. Some for exploring. Some people enjoy the process of building a character, and some people just like to make friends. In my case, it was the guilds which did it.

PK is part of the furniture here, and it has been for over a decade now. I know some people don't enjoy it, but overall I think it adds to the experience. Personally, I find the process of making gold frustrating and tedious. I have a few friends who hate leveling with a passion, and another who gets sick of having to collect new equipment with each successive reboot. These are all facets of the game, though, and we accept them however much to our chagrin.

An interesting and well-rounded environment isn't one where you necessarily take to each element with equal fervour. I wonder if it's occurred to many of you that one of the things which makes this place distinct from other MUDs is the fact we don't niche ourselves. We're not a full roleplaying MUD, or a full PK MUD, or a full puzzle MUD, or a full anything MUD. Becoming any of the above would be a step in the wrong direction. A lesson which, quite frankly, the powers that be should have already learned from the battlepoints.'

You need to understand, he just spent a lot of time in Valinor, he's used to trying to enforce his personal opinions on the communications of other people. Tireless, if there are any new areas under development, no one gives a shit. Valinor has already admitted that aside from a few select areas there will no longer be new areas released in T2T, and they are going to focus on revising in game content.

By the way, if you're going to revise in-game content, a good step might be updating the convenient regions system, not deleting in game content for no fucking reason.

But you know, good steps are more what Valinor leans away from. Why do sensible developing when you can police the comm like the fucking KGB and enforce your bullshit religious beliefs on a hundred or so people to sate some perverse desire to gain power over people, since they're a bunch of useless shitfucks like Draugluin who will never maintain power over anyone IRL?

Just fucking quit T2T already, people. How fucking hard is it? Delete your client and fucking walk away, quit letting these egotistical shitbag ainu just rape your sense of self respect and giving into their powertrip garbage.

I'll concede that point, Cruice. What I was trying to get at with the problem possibly being bigger than you realized is that there are new (and large) areas under development which you would have no ability to explore as they're not in the game yet. What if the problem was present in all of them?

  • Author

Well Tireless, you may be right, I might not know if there was a bigger problem. But I've been around Arda a few times, and I've only seen one specific area that was screwed up, and I reported it.

If there is a bigger problem it wasn't noticeable by any means, and I don't see what harm, showing what region you're in, causes anyone other than a little help, or something interesting to see.

As for your analogy. Sure, Valinor may be giving us the bare minimum of good. But I've always gotten the shit end of the stick from them, and you know that. So in my opinion I have reason to be a bit bias towards their antics. I just feel a lot of what they do is more detrimental to someone else, or groups of players, rather than help the MUD as a whole.

Cruice, you know that I bear you no animus as a person, don't hold a grudge against you, and for no reason to I desire to say or make anyone believe untrue negative things about you. If I'm wrong and you don't know... well, you should. I've told off good friends of mine in your defense in the last several months because I thought you were right.

In this case, however, you're just not. You don't have the context by which to appreciate how much Valinor has to do, what kind of hours and expertise they're working with, the allocation of resources, the process which changes/fixes etc must go through, or a lot of other information relevant to your conclusions. You might think you do because Aryl was an immort and he told you, but... no.

The reason major projects like PVP flags are able to be done at all is because certain individuals who are EXTREMELY dedicated have taken a personal interest in the task. It is extremely probable to me that Mathias works harder to improve the game than anybody in the game works at their RL occupation. If he makes a particular project his baby, it gets done by virtue of his sheer hard work and dedication.

You appear to be succumbing to what I call the 'Nothing, good, best' fallacy: If a person is not obligated to do anything for you, any good act, no matter how small, is still a good act. Even if the person could have done more, they've not done anything wrong. If I have $10 in change in my pocket walking down the street, see a homeless guy and give him a dime, while I could have given him more, I've not done anything wrong by giving him what I did.

Could Valinor give us more? Sure. But that doesn't mean they're doing anything wrong by providing the amount of support they have. The choice made regarding regions in the prompt was made with their full awareness of their resources and what it would take to fix the problem. You know neither. You are not in a position to criticize this decision.

9 or 10 rooms... that you know of. What happens if the new areas had to have that fixed for all of their rooms? That's like 300+ rooms which would require fixing for a system that is part of a system no longer supported by the game.

Realistically speaking, the is really overdue. The regional prompt was part of the battlepoint system and should have been taken out when battlepoints were.

As far as I can remember, Valinor's unwritten motto has been, 'If it's broken, don't bother to fix it, just throw it out.'

The only things that are 'fixed' are either made entirely different. (Like this PK flag business), made worse, or nerfed enough to where it isn't even affective in the game. There are countless examples.

I know the ainur's job may be tough, taxing, or even a nuisance. But every person in Valinor, knew what they were getting into, wanted to get into it, and now (in my eyes) seems too lazy to actually 'try' and fix things, and make things better. Rather than make things worse because they seem 'too powerful' in one person's eyes.

I have only ever seen things made worse, downgraded, nerfed, or deleted. Very very very few occassions have I seen something upgraded, or buffed.

Maybe what the ainur are looking for is for everyone to wield a nice fluffy pillow, wear your best bubble wrap armour, don't forget the bag lunch your mother packed you, and run around Arda without a care in the world. Even if you wrong someone else, or they wrong you, don't expect anything to be done.

It's not that it was half broken. I'd understand if it were, sure go ahead and remove it if it's a huge project. But, unless I'm mistaken, I bug reported the rooms that were screwed up, there were only about 9 or 10. If fixing the name of the region in 9 or 10 rooms, is too tasking for our Admin. right now? I would hate to see how something that may actually take some work, would end up.

@Cruice, every system left in the game requires maintenance from time to time. It cannot be left in half broken. I mean, it can, but it looks super unprofessional. So either they had to spend time fixing errors in the region system... or they had to remove it. I don't see a problem with the decision, though I also understand why you'd dislike its removal. [09:32] You told Morwen: Is there a reason that the $X in my prompt is showing up as '$X' instead of the region I'm in?

[09:32] Morwen told you: regions have been removed...so that prompt setting is no longer available

[09:32] Morwen told you: see updates

[09:32] You told Morwen: Oh, ok.

[09:33] You told Morwen: What was the reason for removing the regions?

[09:33] You told Morwen: It was nice to be able to see what region you were in, and where.

[09:34] Morwen told you: there were some problems with that, a few rooms that were showing the wrong regions and stuff...rather than trying to fix that we felt it best to just remove it since it was no longer being used for anything

[09:35] You told Morwen: Well it is helpful with the find, and sense system.

[09:36] Morwen told you: it wasn't necessary...find is already powerful enough as it is

I'd like to focus on one tell inparticular.

[09:34] Morwen told you: there were some problems with that, a few rooms that were showing the wrong regions and stuff...RATHER THAN TRYING TO FIX THAT WE FELT IT BEST TO JUST REMOVE IT since it was no longer being used for anything

Of course. Why bother to fix the 9 or 10 rooms that I bug reported were wrong? It's much easier to get rid of something that helps players see what region they are in, and where the regions end. God forbid those 10 rooms are screwed up in an area that everyone in their right mind would know are messed up.

I'm under no delusions that what I say here will have any impact at all. I was asked what my opinion was. I gave it. Do I think it's going to get implemented? No. Does this necessarily constitute whining? No.

That doesn't show a problem with the MUD. It shows a problem with a players. Irime made a retarded decision, that caused that player to quit. There are other ways to stop listening to someone talk on the comm. One is comm off, the second is ignore.

Bringing PvP to a screeching halt because 1 new player quit because some dumbass wanted to kill a newbie instead of ignoring him, is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen happen on this MUD.

Also, if being 'blessed' once and losing your gear is enough to make you quit the game instantly. I highly doubt that player would have stuck around for a long time and really be an active player for the mud.

    http://logs.dyndns.dk/viewer.php/14450

It's not really about newbie killing, it's about an attitude some of the more active PKers have. Irime Blessed this player for talking on the comm and that player quit.

Taken from one of Mathias' posts on the T2T forum where most of you would have already read it if you actually cared about this flag idea,

'I've mentioned this on the comm, and I'll mention it here: The problem is not that players die. It has nothing to do with a loss of stats or experience. It doesn't matter what the player loses (if anything). It's about being attacked when you don't want to be. Earlier this month, a new player who had escalated his activity and was really getting to know the game and enjoy it was 'blessed' to make him stop talking on the comm. This player lost his equipment through the blessing, and more importantly, was made abundantly clear that players could and would attack him for no apparent reason. Because that attitude was incongruent with a friendly atmosphere, that player quit and has not logged in since (after accruing over 2 days of age in a couple of weeks).

This attitude that players need to 'stfu or die' when there's a disagreement is unhealthy, both for the players in their own interpersonal interactions, and for the game itself. '

You can discuss whatever flaws the flag has here:

As I think Norin said, they are trying to compensate for something that is virtually impossible to have back in the game. A community of upper level PVP'ers that prevented this sort of stuff by providing retrobution on spreekillers along with an admin that would nuke those that were killing newbies usually very fast. They only police comms and certain cheating, they want code to 'police' the remainder.

We need to keep the place all warm and fuzzy for them, because anyone that has been killed or stolen from as a newbie has left the mud forever. It's a fact.

None of those options would work; a PvP flag is either COMPLETE protection or NONE at all. It's not like gold is hard to come across, so it would be so simple to keep certain characters contracted indefinitely, thus rendering the flag useless. Basically if they want a PvP flag they're going to have to craft a very specific set of MUD etiquette rules that MUST be followed if you are PK immune. For example, if someone with the flag turned on corpse loots, nuke. Of course, this leads to a ton of false accusations and masses of law reports but I guess that's how it is.

The thing is though, there really wouldn't be an influx of law reports. Inititally maybe, but abusers will be nuked quickly and there would be a period of peace after that. So yeah, if they want the PvP flag implemented, they need new harassment rules and a zero tolerance policy.

  • Author
    Tireless [legacy]

I think that the PVP flag is a good idea, but I strongly disagree with its implementation.

The point with which I disagree is that it removes accountability from those who choose not to PK. As it is proposed, I can claimjump any and everyone as much as I desire and they will have _no_ recourse against it. None! I can talk shit as much as I want and there is no way for anyone to get back at me. Aside from, you know, claimjumping. It's rewriting the rules for social interaction in Arda in a way I find discouraging.

I had two ideas for how it could be changed so that it would effectively accomplish its purpose, yet keep the current social order of things:

1 - Have contracts override the PK flag. That is, if you have a C on you and the assassin has the C, they and their party members (so long as the assassin is in the room) can attack and kill you. This way it is impossible to spree or randomkill (or, at least, it's much harder - probably impossible to spree), yet people who commit unacceptable actions (for example... Braliin!) can be retaliated against. Perhaps to boost the buffer against randomkills, make the contractor pay 5k extra to override the PK flag - so they pay 7k but only a 2k contract shows up on the victim. That way the victim can't cash in on the contract but the contractor still has to go considerably out of his way to make someone a target.

2 - Enable a game-supported system of personal contracts: Put out a contract that only a list of people can complete. Eg use the same system as the CC mailing system - 'Which assassins may complete this contract? Names: Rendor, Oracle, Yun.' In this way, option 1 is effectively offered, but without the possibility of your target knowing they're contracted, preserving the element of surprise. This also would allow ginormous contract values to be offered because the contractor could know with certainty that the cash isn't going to the victim.

The reality is that people being protected from PVP are still able to harass other players, and are protected from retaliation by any means other than filing law reports. The PVP flag as described is begging -- pleading, really -- to increase the number of law reports being filed to the point of absurdity. And I'm quite sure that we don't want Melkor having any more to do with how we play the game than is absolutely critical, given the general level of incompetency with which he's executed the duties of his office.

How big of a problem this will be is a question-mark. Given the nature of how Valinor wants to implement the change to PVP, I think that Mathias has implemented it very well. I spent several hours trying to think of workarounds and ways to break the system, and I've come up with very few apart from the problems inherent to its nature. So I think that big kudos to Mathias and any other immorts who worked on the project are in order. While I disagree with some choices made, I think that it's workable and will be improved over the course of time to make a positive impact on the game. The initial presentation is going to be rough, but we have to keep in mind that every choice Valinor makes can be molded; the only thing that's really undesirable is when Valinor makes a move in completely the wrong direction and refuses to change its mind (as was the case in battlepoints). I don't think this is completely the wrong direction.

The shifting social dynamics (secret and public alliances, arch-rivals, etc) are the things that make people watch shows like Survivor and, I think, Lost (I've only seen part of one episode, but that's how it struck me). This game has those in spades, and the logpage is like a super-concentrated version of that.

I think we should pimp T2T out as a mass multiplayer text-based version of Survivor: Nerds vs. Losers.

Yoana, even though it seems like most of the herks now have this strange belief that saying something enough will make it true, it doesn't mean you have to try to follow it blindly also. I mean if you really have been 'accepted' by MIT, then you should know by now they don't like sheep or lemmings. So, while you keep trying to call me an idiot etc, it won't have any relevance on the current situation. Generally debates on here are riddled with insults and comments degenerate into a 'he said she said' with bug abuse accusations and why x player shouldn't be allowed to talk. Holding the same debate at the forum where the ainur can keep the thread clean, or on the comm where everybody can get involved makes a bit of a difference.

This is obvious Etrius, they are afraid of the input of players who have played the game nearly as long as many have coded for it (if not longer). Sadly enough, even I dont like the PVP flag. If I die due to stuff I say on here, its called being held responsible. I have no issue with that. There will be people who now can completely ignore RP and protection of areas or harass players and steal shit without having any form of reprucussion.

Udungul has not been 'constantly' on its knees by any measure. For the better part of a year, Udungul was the most significant and consistent threat to anyone questing in Mordor, and contained between zero and two 'herkies' (with the two it at some point during that time housed being two whose conduct ought to improve their reputation.)

It just happens that anyone who are friends with/etc with Aryl are indeed shitbags while they are in contact with him.

And why is everyone ripping on spencer for his comment? It is true, Lomar basically whored out to Aryl and is now a herkie (in order to get activity/protection/kills/etc). It was bound to happen, and dungs have been fairly weak in resistance to the Aryl infection ever since Azkur/Amearn all but took over the guild and ruined it's decent player base. It's sad to see such a historied establishment constantly on it's knees.

Being a herk has nothing to do with where you live anymore. It's a blanket term for particular class of shitbag.

    Fucking exactly.

'That definition isn't entirely true, either. It refers to Aryl, Ravathir and their friends. You might not have noticed that none of their enemies are referred to as 'herkies' when some of them share the exact same reputation.'

'Particular class of shitbag' could easily entail friendship , so this isn't a reflection on the value of the definition. That said I don't think friendship with Aryl is a necessary condition of being labelled a herkie.

Firstly, hitlist me all you want, none of my characters exist anymore, secondly, Grozny is not a herkie, far from, he is from the other side of the world!

    An Ode to Keats:

    Find Me Here

    Speak To Me

    I want to feel you

    I need to hear you

    You are the light

    That's leading me

To the place where I find peace again.

You are the strength, that keeps me walking.

You are the hope, that keeps me trusting.

You are the light to my soul.

You are my purpose...you're my Ulfang.

How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?

Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

You calm the storms, and you give me rest.

You hold me in your hands, you won't let me fall.

You steal my heart, and you take my breath away.

Would you take me in? Take me deeper now?

How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?

Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?

Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

    Cause you're all I want, You're all I need

    You're my Ulfang, my Ulfang

    You're all I want you're all I need

    You're my Ulfang, my Ulfang.

    You're all I want you're all I need.

    You're my Ulfang, my Ulfang.

You're all I want you're all I need, you're my Ulfang, my Ulfang.

While his mechanics weren't perfect (English is, after all, not his first language) I think Kelevra's comment was legible. I didn't have to work to decode it, at least.
