    The eastern faces of the Ephel Duath are sheer.  They seem to
fall by cliff and precipice to a black trough that lies between
them and the inner ridge.  High above on the mountainside looms
the craggy black tower of Cirith Ungol.  The stones in its bulky
walls seem to glow dully, reflecting the flickering red light that
flashes above its battlements.  The road descends from the pass steeply,
with a serpentine curve which prevents a clear view of those
traveling its lengths.

    This is the base of the south-facing wall of the feared Tower
of Cirith Ungol. The eerie looming heights stare down at you
threateningly. This craggy black fortification is a monument to
crafts now rarely found in Arda. To the west lies the cleft of
this mountain, whilst to the southeast a twisting road descends
from this pinnacle down to the dry dusty plains of Mordor.
The sky is clear yet still dark as night.
