--- on land! So I thought wtf and went to explore... too. Look at me

l rock
    A rock made out of solid granite, and apparently pulled off a larger
stone by force, as the fracture marks are natural looking.  There are no
chisel marks or anything indicating the work of a stonemason.

    Suddenly rushing out of the water are numerous green luminescent 
tentacles which stink horribly and reach out to grab you!  A horrible, 
steaming reek falls over you and the bubbling and gurgling of this 
horrid creature nearly overpower you!

    At last, after toil, you reach your destination.  This area 
is completely covered with debris.  Through the fallen stones, you 
can see the massive gate to Khazad-dum standing before you.  It is a 
beautiful piece of work, enchanted by the Noldor in their days of power
and made by the dwarves while the craft of ancient days still thrived. 
A thick pool of rancid dark water sits nearby.  You can still see the 
remains of an ancient road leading into the debris and away towards the
west into the lake.
The sun shines brightly in the eastern sky.
The sky is brilliantly clear.
    There is water to the west.
    The only obvious exit is north.
