And Avaar, I didn't know what shape glorfindel was in, and I didn't want to give myself away by going in too early. That's why I waited for Glorfindel to die. I knew I had to kill them before they could get to the white towers.

Variel died on the fourth round ,so standing there and fireballing Julius just wouldn't work. Even if they manage to get fireball off in the next round Variel would die.
The ONLY solution to the problem could be Variel to rent a room there before they start the council. I guess he was able to.
