Well, I do suck without barkskin. I don't need blocking, I am doing ok without it :) With barkskin I'm as good as a silvan.
Backstab or no backstab, why are you taking so much damage with that much armour?
Tower Guard's helmet (worn).
Sturdy armour (worn).
A dwarven war shield (worn).
The beast is good, but not THAT good. Train some blocking.
