shield your nose.  The walls and floor are made of cheap wooden boards.
The current state of the latrine is quite disturbing; so disturbing in fact
that you wonder if the variags bring their horses in here too.  But if you

    As the foul reek of the latrine continues to enter your
nostrils, your mind is overwhelmed by it all and you collapse
in a heap on the floor.

    A guard runs out of the latrine, holding his nose, and runs further
into the town. As you come to and look around, you realize that someone must
have rescued you from the festering floor of the latrine and dragged
you outside.
