There is no brain nor skills involved here (although Grimscar has a lot of the latter), it was pure luck. Luck that this place is bugged, and luck that is resetted at exactly the moment Grimscar needed to survive.

I can only guess that the guards reset, as they do reguarly. did you look at the flagpole after he left, I'd wager there was a flag there.
There are ways. But that doesn't make the area any less buggy, regardless of whatever happened in this log or in this situation. Take it from someone who has spent a lot of time there. :P
