Charm, herb lore were awesome skills. Really. They made up for the other 2. and eaglesight was very usefull too. If someone tell you the old rangers had crappy skills just don't believe them, it isn't true. Also they didn't suck in combat at all.

Rangers should be headbutt masters cause Aragorn headbutted the badass Uruk-hai, I saw it!

Unthematic? Why? What the hell constitutes thematic? When did you read about someone headbutting? When did a hobbit ever cast a fireball? If you want to be thematic, then there are no professions and no special abilities at all and Hobbits would be farmers and Elves would do nothing but drink wine and sing Enya songs.

charm was completely unthematic, healing was nearly useless compared to every other healing method in the game, and control fire was equally as useless with eaglesight being usable in combat. Plus rangers sucked at basic combat a lot more than they should have. Looked like you all were forgetting those.

Finduilun again: Byron, for moral dunedain there was only 2 decent animals to be charmed.

If you don't know others that doesn't mean that there aren't

P.S. When someone obviously not good at being an (old) ranger talks a lot kinda pisses me. Sorry

Finduilun: I am sure we all remember how useless rangers were before the big change.

Sorry, being ranger before this so called big change was a pleasure. Being smart Ranger was kick ass. Rangers have been the most powerfull, pksafe profession.

Finduilun, I do admit sheep -> buck, making the profession a bit worse for morals, but please consider that having a buck along with you still counted for a level 13 or thereabout with a prod, effectively close to doubling your damage. This is of course in addition to an extra 250hp, give or take, for when you get attempted. This was better for evils when a herd of sheep would very likely do as much damage as yourself, sometimes more. Rangers were very much limitted to using charmed animals only when fighting grid monsters, for gold and such, as you could not bring them along for most quests, whereas you can still feint anywhere you'd like, perhaps you can still even feint while swimming, I'm not sure. I am sure, however, that if you spend a minute or two of your time considering these things, you will agree with me on the following:

No. Rangers were in no way balanced for different alignments. Sheep -> Buck -> Bear, and most morals would not kill the guy standing by the herd of sheep, though they could still have charmed the ewe there after an evil got the herd since it was very much just as good, maybe some morals felt this went against their RP, though.

Charm was to morals very nice, but better yet for evils.

Yes. You should stop whining. Charm was an excellent ability, and a competent ranger player could easily be just as effective as a ranger now, except for in a pk situation where feint is far superior to just about anything else on the mud.

I, myself, prefer charm over feint. The only thing that now bothers me with rangers is feint being ranger-only, while they can throw on a deathmask, have a tactics potion and use headbutt more effectively than most warriors to inflict damage. 10% of the rangers around know how to use heal. 1% of the players around find a use for tracking at some point in their lives. Eaglesight in combat -> all. 2% of the players use traps even though they are very effective for pk'ing, perhaps more so than feint.

I like how rangers were changed to this because people did not know how to play them, and if people did know how to play them now, there is a very high chance they'd be changed for the worse.

Byron, for moral dunedain there was only 2 decent animals to be charmed.

One was the bear at studded belt quest, the other was the canines in CU.

And not every ranger had the knowhow to go into CU, nevermind the balls.

So, yes...Rangers did suck for atleast 60% of the proffesion.

Why not give warriors a dagger throwing ability like Boromir did in FotR? I think it would be cool to have warriors be able to bash people with their shields. Another thing would just be some warrior specific weapons.Maybe something like a rapier/dagger combo where you can wear a shield. The dagger would boost your defense and dodge and also allow you to get a second hit in occasionally.

Oh, and yeah, I'm getting sick of saying this to newbie rangers, but here goes: Rangers did not suck before they were turned into a pk profession, you were simply ass-sucking newbies to a far too great extent to use the profession's skills and abilities to benefit yourselves. A wizard who doesn't use spells/srs is the definition of suck, much like a ranger now still almost sucks if you don't feint, old rangers would also of course suck if you didn't use charm, but I suppose it was a bit hard to figure out how to use that ability correctly, huh.

Thats a joke. I saw my close friend who unfortunately got bored of the game use a ranger and could make gold and rape crap way nastier than most people around. Plus they have and still have one of the best shields in the game and used to have sheep. Do you remember sheep and mastiff's? Why did calenril work so many people? They have just been made better in straight combat now. Which honestly themeatically doesn't make any sense. Keep in mind, rami had the best gear in the game in terms of armour for all intents and purposes (at least straight up). And a good deal of natraons damage for some of those rounds were actually just from feint. Whereas natraon won this fight with feint, Rami lost this fight because of headbutt. Strange eh? There isn't anything wrong with rangers now. Compare them to wizard(best at gathering eq), archer(just outright nasty damage with good combo's), assassin(needs something of an overhaul but still has the nice fade for mordor and the critical hunt for pk's), thieves(can make straight gold like no other) and they really aren't that overbalanced. In fact I would say they are pretty even. Now, the problem really is, warriors haven't seen a real change in years (upon years?), and seeing as anyone can immitate a warriors advantages quite easily with secondaries, they are very limited in their usefulness. Only in certain quests where HB is important and a couple other places are they really even worth it. But our titles own.:) Blah, what a rant, anyways, I am already planning the next pounderumble, so send me ideas.:)

Yeah, I know quite a few players that stayed ranger for a long time holding on to the slim glimmer of hope that they may one day be overhauled. Now that they can kick a little ass everyone wants to tune em down. Let them have some fun for a while.

I think the fact that a Ranger cannot feint with empty hands makes rangers and warriors almost equal.

A warrior could take someone down empty-handed (with headbutts), a ranger cannot do the same (with feints).

Hence, in a barehanded fight a warrior would own a ranger.

  • Author
    Perry [legacy]

    There are 3 options.

    A) Balance rangers, making feint either not quite so powerful, or less frequent.

    B) Eliminate Rangers.

    C) Eliminate all other professions.

any one of these would restore 'balance'. Only one would restore 'balance' and 'playability'.

Another idea is to make rangers have soft heads.(most do already, but it doesnt show in combat). That way my headbutt would do more damage to them, and make it on par with Feint.

Yes, hello, I would like to call attention to the fact that evils have effective playerkillers, such as Eznima and Toruh, which deal WAY TOO MUCH damage in PKs. If this mud is to be balanced,I am sure we all see theres only one solustion: please limit the ranger profession to moral characters only.
