There's a whole field of study that explores levels of animal intelligence. It's called Ethology I think, I considered getting into it when I was in University... whatever. At a certain point, Limpy was -forced- to make a decision to try eating something that he didn't recognize as food. What factors went into his transition from 'That isn't food' to 'I'm going to eat that,' I couldn't say. I can say that it wasn't what we'd call conditioning... because once he'd tried the food, he was willing to accept it the next time it was offered. Conditioning requires repetition, where this was a direct transition from 'this isn't food' to 'hey, this is good shit!'

In other news, I actually quite liked Boffo's comment. I know he isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I was a bit taken aback by the voracity of the 'fuckyouness'.
Its called conditioning, Boffo. Which is the same thing as when your cats or dogs, etc. know that they are about to be fed when they hear you preparing their food. Its not reasoning, its like when you go into the bathroom, your brain gets you ready to take a piss cause it knows that whenever you go into the bathroom and stand in front of the toilet, you're about to take a piss.

So, a couple of years ago, Grimrod confiscated a Siamese Fighting Fish from his niece, because the poor thing wasn't getting enough care, and gave it to my wife to nurse back to health. Although this fish (which we unanimously named Limpy because he couldn't really swim) has a brain that's about the size of a poppy-seed it began to learn that my wife was a good deal for him. He'd never seen fishfood that wasn't flake before, but learned that it was good shit. He also learned to 'like' waterchange day. He'd swim (well, scoot) into the temporary cup while his tank was cleaned. What the hell is my point? Instinct would teach this creature to be totally afraid of people, but he learned to trust us, and I'm not saying that they're smart or anything... but I'd say this is clear proof that they can reason. My wife has had as many as 20 (more???) of these fish, and several of them have had some very interesting personality quirks.

Um, we do not differ from the animal world in the sense a human could explain it. We differ from each world out there but every living creature has the ability to feel, think, imagine, reason etc. Anyway, first it's a world of energy and then a world of objects. I mean every creature that is alive is a bulb of awareness.
