It seems as though you have come across the entrance to a dunlending settlement of sorts; thin plumes of smoke rise from behind the wooden stakes, and the trampling hooves of horses can be faintly discerned. A large wooden gate of massive proportions is the only obstacle to gaining entrance into the settlement, and what an obstacle it is. This gate was built to withstand great stress and battering.
